چکیده

We theoretically investigate the response of optical phase conjugators to incident probe pulses. In the stable ~subthreshold! operating regime of an optical phase conjugator it is possible to transmit probe pulses with a superluminally advanced peak, whereas conjugate reflection is always subluminal. In the unstable ~abovethreshold! regime, superluminal response occurs both in reflection and in transmission, at times preceding the onset of exponential growth due to the instability. @S1050-2947~98!06206-4#

Superluminal pulse transmission through a phase-conjugating mirror

We theoretically analyze wave packet transmission through a phase-conjugating mirror and show that the transmission of a suitably chosen input pulse is superluminal, i.e. the peak of the pulse emerges from the mirror before the time it takes to travel the same distance in vacuum. This pulse reshaping effect can be attributed directly to the dispersion relation in the nonlinear medium constituti...

Measurement of net group and reshaping delays for optical pulses in dispersive media.

We experimentally demonstrate the direct measurement of net group and reshaping delays for arbitrary optical pulses in dispersive media, verifying the earlier prediction of Peatross et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2370 (2000)]. Incoherent pulse propagation in an absorptionless system is well described by net group delay; even the medium causes a great deal of deformation in the transmitted pulse. ...

Dispersion and nonlinearity compensation by spectral phase conjugation.

We propose the use of spectral phase conjugation to compensate for dispersion of all orders, self-phase modulation, and self-steepening of an optical pulse in a fiber. Although this method cannot compensate for loss and intrapulse Raman scattering, it is superior to the previously suggested midway temporal phase conjugation method if high-order dispersion is a main source of distortion. The res...

Effect of cross-phase modulation on optical phase conjugation in dispersion-shifted fiber.

The temporal effect of optical phase conjugation in dispersion-shifted fiber is studied numerically. Frequency chirping is induced in the conjugate pulse by the signal pulse and the pump wave through cross-phase modulation, which increases with the signal power and may distort the pulse shape when the conjugate pulse propagates in the standard fiber. It is also shown that, when the signal power...

Incidence-angle selection and spatial reshaping of terahertz pulses in optical tunneling.

We present spatially resolved measurements of the electric field of terahertz pulses undergoing optical tunneling that show strong pulse reshaping in both time and space. This reshaping is shown to be a result of frequency and incidence-angle filtering of the complex amplitude of the plane-wave basis set that makes up the pulse. This filtering leads to spreading of the pulse in the time and spa...
